Fostering and strengthening cooperation in social innovation in Latin America
We support the alliance for the health and digital well-being of young people in Latin America
Compulsive gambling has become a growing concern in Latin America, particularly among young people. The proliferation of sports betting through illegal websites has exacerbated this problem, generating negative health consequences.
The use of cell phones, social networks and virtual wallets is creating social damage to the culture of effort and work, creating favorable scenarios to generate the addictive process of pathological gambling.
The incorporation of technology and massive access to the Internet have allowed online sports betting to grow in an uncontrolled manner. Many young people use illegal sites that operate without government regulation, which increases their vulnerability.
It is our assessment that the issue of compulsive gambling among young people, driven by sports betting on illegal websites, requires immediate attention.
It is imperative that effective regulatory and educational policies be developed to mitigate the negative effects of this disorder. It is vital that the government, non-governmental organizations, and the community work together to protect vulnerable populations and promote a safe and responsible gambling environment.
For this reason, between July and September, we actively collaborated with civil society organizations in Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and Paraguay, in partnership with AIDEF – Asociacion Interamericana de Defensorías Públicas AIDEF (the Inter-American Association of Public Defenders), to strengthen funding and cooperation mechanisms to promote a work agenda that includes three strategic objectives:
Legislation and implementation of regulations
Prevention education
Psychological treatment and support
